Easter and The Church of the Holy Sepulchre
In many ways, Easter Sunday is the pinnacle of the Christian year. Christians set aside this day to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus from death and the grave. On this stop during our tour, we will visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. By way of background, remember that Jesus was crucified on the Friday of that week, around 9:00 in the morning, and he died sometime close to 3:00 pm. After his death, his followers took his body down from the cross, gave it the preliminary preparations for burial, and then laid it in the tomb. Friday sunset to Saturday sunset was the Sabbath. The disciples waited during the Sabbath and coped with their shock and grief.
Then came Sunday. When the women who were to complete the preparations for Jesus’ burial arrived at the tomb, they were stunned. The stone weighing several tons was rolled aside. Not knowing what else to do, they hurried back to inform their friends. The disciples thought the women were simply hysterical. But at the urging of the women, Peter and John ran to the tomb and confirmed that it was indeed empty as the women had said. Jesus later appeared to the disciples proving he was risen. Currently a huge basilica covers the site of Jesus’ tomb and joins it with the nearby site of Calvary, where Jesus was crucified.
